Why I Don’t Use an iPhone: The Display Flickering Issue

For many people, iPhones are the ultimate smartphone — sleek design, smooth performance, and powerful features. But for me, there’s one major dealbreaker that has stopped me from using an iPhone since the iPhone 12 all the way up to the latest iPhone 17: the display flickering issue.

The Problem

Whenever I use an iPhone for more than a few minutes, I immediately notice discomfort. My eyes start to hurt, sometimes producing tears, and after extended use, the strain turns into a headache. This isn’t a one-time occurrence — it happens consistently whenever I use an iPhone display.

This flickering issue (often linked to PWM — Pulse Width Modulation) is subtle and not visible to everyone, but for sensitive users like me, the impact is very real. Instead of enjoying the experience, I find myself battling eye strain and fatigue.

Why It Matters

Technology is supposed to make life easier, not harder. A smartphone is something we use every day, often for hours, and if the display itself causes discomfort, then no amount of advanced features can make up for that. It becomes a health issue, not just a preference.

The Dealbreaker

I admire many things about the iPhone — its performance, camera quality, and seamless ecosystem. But because of the display flickering, I simply cannot use it as my daily device. Comfort and health matter more than specs on paper.

Until Apple addresses this issue or offers an alternative display technology that doesn’t rely heavily on flicker, I’ll be sticking to other smartphone brands that provide a more comfortable experience for my eyes.
