When building a NAS (Network Attached Storage), many people think that using SSDs is the smarter choice. After all, SSDs are fast, quiet, and efficient. But based on my own experience, I can confidently say: don’t use SSDs for long-term NAS storage.
Recently, I tried using a Samsung 870 EVO SSD in my NAS setup. Surprisingly, it didn’t even last a month. The drive failed completely — and worse, it couldn’t be recovered or repaired using any available hard disk tools. All data stored inside was lost for good.
This experience taught me a valuable lesson: SSDs are not built for continuous write-heavy workloads that NAS systems demand. While SSDs shine in speed, they wear out faster under constant usage, making them a risky option for storing critical files.
My Recommendation
✅ Use high-quality NAS HDDs (such as WD Red or Seagate IronWolf) for reliable, long-term storage.
✅ Reserve SSDs for cache purposes only, where they can boost performance without being the main storage medium.
In the long run, this combination ensures both speed and reliability, while protecting your data from sudden and irrecoverable SSD failures.
